A driver sparked debate on social media after getting out of his car to ask the driver in front of him at a red light not to leave such a large gap between his car and the one ahead.
The clip was posted on TikTok by artist T3a and shows footage of him stepping out of his car, knocking on the window of the driver in front, and signaling for him to move closer to the car ahead at the red light.
“Traffic lights have sensors, guys, you’re not going to test my patience,” he wrote in the overlay text on the video, which has already accumulated over 8 million views. While many users were confused, this behavior actually stems from a common traffic myth.
Many drivers believe that leaving large gaps between cars at traffic lights prevents the sensors from detecting vehicles waiting, potentially causing longer wait times for everyone stopped.
According to the U.S. Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), traffic detectors work by sensing the metal mass of vehicles positioned over wire loops embedded in the pavement.
So, if cars leave large gaps, those sensors may not register all the vehicles in line, which could impact the green light timing. However, many modern traffic systems have evolved beyond basic loop detectors.
According to the FHWA, newer detection methods include video cameras and radar systems that can identify vehicles regardless of small positioning gaps. Thus, T3a’s complaint would only be valid if the system on that road is outdated.
Because of this, many users criticized his behavior. “The way I would’ve slammed my car into ‘park’,” one said. “The way I’d use my bumper and then go around you,” another jabbed. “This could’ve been handled completely differently,” said a third.
